SATAN can be coupled with GSI's current MBS data acquisition system. Listmode data may be received from a running experiment just as if they were read off disk or tape. No extra programming effort is required. However, an extra process, the so-called Remote Event Server has to be started on any of GSI's AIX or Linux computers which receives events from the frontend CPUs and distributes them to multiple clients. Hence it takes off load from the frontend data acquisition. The necessary steps are described in the following.

• On the frontend side make sure the necessary event servers are running:
  
  
  1. Login to the VME processor which should run your data acquisition
  2. select your working directory, e.g.:

     cd mbsrun/scal_s12
     

     or

     cd mbsrun/ppc_vme_uwe
     

  3. start MBS

     mbs
     

  4. initialize MBS

     mbs>@start
     

     Note that the associated command script start.scom must start the event stream server:

     start task m_stream_serv
     

  5. start acquisition

     mbs>sta acq
     

• Start the remote event server on any of GSI's AIX or Linux machines. You may choose your own local workstation. Let's assume your local workstation is biori6p, and your frontend is r2-13, then the UNIX shell command:

  mrevserv r2-13
  

  creates the remote event server on biori6p. Alternatively:

  nohup mrevserv r2-13 &
  

  runs the server in background and you get back your terminal window.

• On the SATAN side choose the appropriate data source:

  input / dsn(biori6p::)
  

  The funny '::' distinguishes a node name from a file name. If everything is OK data are now accepted and delivered to your analysis routine.
