| Overview

Welcome and thank you for visiting the website of the Biophysics Group at the GSI in Darmstadt.

The biophysics group is an interdisciplinary collaboration of radiobiologists, physicists, chemists, biochemists and technicians.

Basic research activities comprise cellular, chromosomal and DNA damage induction by heavy ions from the SIS and UNILAC accelerators. However, most of our efforts are devoted to the tumour radiotherapy which started in December 1997 with the irradiation of the first two patients. The current status report on the heavy-ion therapy project is available here.

The radiotherapy at GSI is developed and operated together with the FZ Rossendorf, Dresden, the German Cancer Research Centre, Heidelberg and the Radiological University Hospital, Heidelberg.

Further collaborations exist with numerous radiobiology and biophysics groups from universities and institutes all over the world.
