About this document

Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4 Plus printers do not provide a signal on RTS that is provided on most other LaserJet models. This creates a problem for printing from AIX because AIX looks at incoming signal CTS. This is normally tied to the printer RTS signal using all the standard AIX cabling schemes. This will simply not work as it will give a Can't Create error.

This document applies to all levels of AIX.

Pinouts for HPLJ4 plus (128-Port Adapter)

New Pinouts:   8-Wire
         RJ-45               DB-9
         DSR 1<---------------6 DTR
     /---RTS 2
     |    FG 3
     |   TxD 4--------------->3 RxD
     |   RxD 5<---------------2 TxD
     |    SG 6----------------5 SG
     \-->CTS 7
         DTR 8--------------->4 DSR
These pinouts should work with both XON/XOFF and DTR flow control. When using DTR flow control, use the 'alternate rj45 pinout' setting for the printer device. (Altpin does logical switch DSR->DCD)
New Pinouts:   10-Wire
         RJ-45               DB-9
     /---RTS 2
     |    FG 3
     |   TxD 4---------------->3 RxD
     |   RxD 5<----------------2 TxD
     |    SG 6-----------------5 SG
     \-->CTS 7
         DTR 8---------------->4 DSR
         DCD 10<---------------6 DTR
These pinouts should work with both XON/XOFF and DTR flow control. There is no need for the 'alternate rj45 pinout' setting here. DCD (printer) is already going to DCD (RISC).

Pinouts for HPLJ4 plus (64-Port Adapter)

New Pinouts:   8-Wire
        RJ-45           DB-9
   /----2 RTS
   |    3 RD----------->TD  2
   |    4 DCD<----------DTR 6
   |    5 SG------------SG  5
   |    6 TD<-----------RD  3
   |    7 DTR---------->DSR 4
   \--->8 CTS
These pinouts should work with both XON/XOFF and DTR flow control. There is no setting for the 'alternate RJ45 pinout' setting because there is no need for it. DTR (printer) is already going to DCD (RISC).
