3153 questions and answers

Attachment, cabling and recommended setup

The 3153 Marketing Reference Guide has information regarding 3153 cabling and setup menus. This information includes the cable name, descriptions, part numbers and feature codes.

Recommended 3153 setup parameters

NOTE: The IBM 3153 factory default setup values were selected based on the IBM eServer pSeries and RS/6000 attachment.

The following are some key 3153 setup values for the pSeries and RS/6000 attachment:

   Auto Wrap = On
   Enter Key = Return
   Recv <CR> = <CR>
   Turnaround Character = <CR>

Communication ports and parallel port interface

The 3153 Marketing Reference Guide has information regarding the 3153 serial communication ports and parallel port including:

Highlights of the 3153 main and auxiliary communication ports include:

Host printer configuration

The 3153 Marketing Reference Guide contains detailed 3153 host, printer attachment and configuration information including:

The 3153 supports:

3153 serial communications ports summary information

WARNINGS:

Entering and exiting setup menus

3153 setup menus are entered (emulation dependent) with one of the following key combinations:

This information is in the 3153 User's Guide, Chapter 2, "Setup".

Dual and multiple sessions

The 3153 Marketing Reference Guide contains detailed information regarding the 3153 dual session feature.

Dual (multiple) sessions by multiple ports information:

WARNING:

When the 3153 is configured for a dual session, generally the same communications cable cannot be used for both 3153 serial ports because:

If both host ports are DTE, the 3153 main port serial cable must be a null-modem cable and the 3153 auxiliary serial cable must be a straight modem cable. If the same communications cable is used for both the main and auxiliary port, only one of the two sessions will work.

Dual (multiple) sessions by single port information:

Resetting to IBM factory default settings

A user can reset the 3153 to the factory default settings by following these steps:

  1. Enter the 3153 setup menu.
  2. Enter the Print Exec setup menu (press the Print key).
  3. Move the cursor to Default Terminal and press the Enter key or Space Bar key to select. The 3153 displays DONE, indicating that the action has completed.
  4. Move the cursor to Save Terminal and press the Enter key or Space Bar key to select. The 3153 displays DONE, indicating that the action has completed.
  5. Power off the 3153.
  6. Power on the 3153.

The 3153 now has the IBM factory default settings.

NOTE: The 3153 factory default setup values are based on the pSeries or RS/6000 attachment.

National language support

The 3153 Marketing Reference Guide contains detailed information regarding 3153 national language support.

3153 national language support information includes:

ASCII versus PC style keyboard

The 3153 offers two styles (layouts) of keyboards:

ASCII-style:

PC-style:

Changing between the ASCII-style and PC-style keyboard DOES NOT change the operation of the 3153. The 3153 firmware is inside the 3153 video element. The 3153 changes based on the 3153 setup menus, not based on which keyboard is attached.

How to determine the key ASCII sequences sent by the 3153

This information is designed for programmers and application developers. This information describes how a person can determine the ASCII character sequence/string being sent by a specific key regardless of the emulation selected.

The keys generate an ASCII character or an ASCII character sequence based on the ASCII/ANSI emulation (WYSE, DEC, SCO, ADDS, others). A programmer's reference manual from IBM, WYSE or DEC is the best source to find the operation of a key.

If a programmer's reference manual is not readily available, the following steps should provide some assistance.

  1. Enter 3153 setup.
  2. Set Monitor Mode = On
  3. Set Local = On
  4. Press the desired key.

The 3153 displays the ASCII character or ASCII sequence.

If the 3153 displays a:

Simultaneously display and print data

The host operating system or application can send the 3153 data and request that the 3153 display and send the data to an attached printer.

The operating system or application program controls this feature by using the emulation (IBM,DEC,WYSE) dependent command.

For IBM 3151 emulation:

For WYSE emulation:

For DEC emulation:

Printing data only (no data displayed on the 3153)

The host operating system or application can send the 3153 data and request that the 3153 send the data to an attached printer.

The operating system or application program controls this feature by using the emulation (IBM,DEC,WYSE) dependent command.

For IBM 3151 emulation:

For WYSE emulation:

For DEC emulation:

Debug (monitor) mode

Audience

The 3153 monitor mode capability is a feature for programmers and application developers to debug application programs.

Definition

When the 3153 has Monitor Mode=On, all ASCII control characters (ESC, HT, DLE, FF, LF, CR) are displayed by the 3153 but are not processed by the 3153. For example: When the 3153 receives a carriage return (CR) character, the 3153 displays the carriage return character but does not execute a carriage return. Monitor mode is used to determine the ASCII control characters being sent by the host operating system or application. Monitor mode allows the 3153 to "see" the IBM, DEC, and WYSE emulation commands being sent by the host.

Configuring

To enable monitor mode, enter the 3153 setup menus. In the General (F2) setup menu, select Monitor Mode=On.

Advanced debug mode

Programmers and application developers can attach a second 3153 to the first 3153 and, with monitor mode, perform in advanced debug mode.
  -------- -------- ---------
  | | | Main | | Aux |
  | Host |----------| 3153 |---------| 3153 |
  | | | | | |
  -------- -------- ---------
Main 3153:
  1. Configured Monitor Mode=Off
  2. Configured for passthrough (transparent) mode

Aux 3153:

  1. Configured Monitor Mode=On

The main 3153 displays the application and processes any keyboard inputs. As the main 3153 receives the commands to display the application, the main 3153 simultaneously is sending the data to the auxiliary 3153. The auxiliary 3153 displays the ASCII control characters.

In this advanced debug mode configuration, the programmer or application developer can:

NOTE: Refer to the programmer's manuals on how to get the main 3153 into passthrough (transparent print) mode.
