• What ASCII/ANSI/PCTerm emulations does the 3153 support?

  All 3153 terminals emulate DEC VT300/VT200/VT100, WYSE 50/60, SCO Console, Televideo 925, PC Term, and ADDS Viewpoint. 3153 models announced after September 1995 include IBM 3151 emulation.

• How many serial communication ports does the 3153 have?

  The 3153 includes two serial ports. The serial ports can be configured for:

• Single session, no printer or serial printer or parallel printer
• Dual session, no printer or parallel printer
• Are dual or multiple sessions supported?

  The 3153 supports a dual session by dual port using the two serial ports. Users switch between sessions by pressing Ctrl-Shift-Enter. Each session can have its own unique configuration.

• How many pages of memory are supported?

  This number ranges between 1 and 10. The number of pages depends on emulation, 80/132 column mode, single or dual session and the number of rows per page. The 3153 Marketing Reference Guide includes a table on the number of pages supported.

• Does the 3153 have a parallel printer port?

  Yes.

• Are the 3151 and 3153 keyboards interchangeable?

  No. The 3151 keyboard has a modular RJ45 keyboard interface and the 3153 keyboard has a modular RJ11 keyboard interface.

• Does the 3153 include a tilt-swivel stand?

  Yes. The tilt-swivel stand is not detachable.

• What keyboard languages and character sets does the 3153 support?

  The 3153 supports 29 keyboard languages and 17 8-bit multinational character sets. The 3153 supports only single-byte character sets; it does not support double-byte character sets. The 3153 Marketing Reference Guide includes tables on the keyboard and character set support.

• Can the 3153 display multiple sessions?

  Yes. The 3153 supports 49 rows. Users can configure for two sessions with each session configured for 24, 32, or 43 rows. The 3153 displays the sessions in a top-bottom format.

WARNINGS:

• When attaching a 3153 to a host system or printer using the 3153 Main Port or the 3153 Auxiliary Port, users must know if the host system port is a DCE or DTE and if the printer is a DCE or DTE. This information is used to determine what cabling (modem cable or null-modem cable) is required. If the cabling is incorrect, communications will not occur between the 3153 and the host or the 3153 and the printer.
• Remember, in general:
  • DCE to DCE (or DTE to DTE) requires a null-modem cable
  • DCE to DTE requires a host/modem cable
  • When both 3153 ports are RS-232, the 3153 main port is a DTE and the 3153 auxiliary port is a DCE.

• All 3153s support a real dual session using the 3153 main serial port and the 3153 auxiliary serial port.
• The 3153 is configured for two sessions (in the 3153 setup menu, Sessions=Two).
• The 3153 has two serial communications cables attached:
  • One cable is attached to the 3153 main port (SES1 EIA).
  • One cable is attached to the 3153 auxiliary port (SES2 AUX).
• The two serial communications cables may be connected to a single host (using two host ports) or to two separate host systems.
• Each 3153 session can have unique setup values (emulation, communication, and keyboard setup values).
• The 3153 parallel port can have a printer attached, and the printer can be used by either 3153 session.
• The user switches between sessions using the left Ctrl key with the Enter key on the numeric keypad.
• The 3153 status line indicates the active sessions by displaying S1 for Session 1 and S2 for Session 2.

WARNING:

• The 3153 supports dual (multiple) sessions by single port based on the host operating system support. The pSeries or RS/6000 with the AIX Operating System offers DSCREEN. DSCREEN uses the multiple pages of memory featured in the 3153. AIX allows the user to "jump" between sessions by controlling which 3153 page of memory is displayed. The 3153 pages of memory do not require AIX to resend or retransmit the next session when the user "jumps". The number of multiple sessions is limited to the pages of memory offered by the 3153.

A user can reset the 3153 to the factory default settings by following these steps:

1. Enter the 3153 setup menu.
2. Enter the Print Exec setup menu (press the Print key).
3. Move the cursor to Default Terminal and press the Enter key or Space Bar key to select. The 3153 displays DONE, indicating that the action has completed.
4. Move the cursor to Save Terminal and press the Enter key or Space Bar key to select. The 3153 displays DONE, indicating that the action has completed.
5. Power off the 3153.
6. Power on the 3153.

The 3153 now has the IBM factory default settings.

NOTE: The 3153 factory default setup values are based on the pSeries or RS/6000 attachment.

The 3153 offers two styles (layouts) of keyboards:

ASCII-style:

• The 3153 ASCII-style layout is very similar to the 3151 ASCII-style keyboard, P/N 1392595.
• The 3153 ASCII-style keyboard has the following keys:
  • Clear
  • Reset
  • Erase EOF
  • Jump
  • Send
  • Send Line
• IBM ASCII-style keyboard was initially defined on the 3162, 3163, 3164 and 3151.
• Recommended when configured for IBM 3151 emulation and Key Mode = ASCII.

PC-style:

• The 3153 PC-style layout is identical to the 3151 PC-style keyboard, P/N 1395162.
• The 3153 PC-style keyboard has the following keys:
  • Page Up
  • Page Down
  • Home
  • End
• IBM ASCII-style keyboard was initially defined for the 3151. In 1988-89, ASCII terminals, including 3151, were beginning to attach to PCs. The PCs have multiuser operating systems that support PC mode or scan code mode. This keyboard was a result of the keyboard look and feel the same as a PC keyboard.
• Recommended when configured for IBM 3151 emulation and Key Mode = Scan

Changing between the ASCII-style and PC-style keyboard DOES NOT change the operation of the 3153. The 3153 firmware is inside the 3153 video element. The 3153 changes based on the 3153 setup menus, not based on which keyboard is attached.

This information is designed for programmers and application developers. This information describes how a person can determine the ASCII character sequence/string being sent by a specific key regardless of the emulation selected.

The keys generate an ASCII character or an ASCII character sequence based on the ASCII/ANSI emulation (WYSE, DEC, SCO, ADDS, others). A programmer's reference manual from IBM, WYSE or DEC is the best source to find the operation of a key.

If a programmer's reference manual is not readily available, the following steps should provide some assistance.

1. Enter 3153 setup.
2. Set Monitor Mode = On
3. Set Local = On
4. Press the desired key.

The 3153 displays the ASCII character or ASCII sequence.

If the 3153 displays a:

• small EC, this is the ESC (Escape) character.
• small LF, this is the LF (Line Feed) character.
• small CR, this is the CR (Carriage Return) character.
• small EX, this is the ETX (End of Text) character.

The host operating system or application can send the 3153 data and request that the 3153 display and send the data to an attached printer.

The operating system or application program controls this feature by using the emulation (IBM,DEC,WYSE) dependent command.

For IBM 3151 emulation:

• Begin outbound trace (x'1B' x'20' x'3A'): All data is displayed and sent to the optional device.
• End outbound trace (x'1B' x'20' x'3B'): Causes exit from trace mode.

For WYSE emulation:

• Auxiliary print mode (x'12'): All data is displayed and sent to the optional device.
• Turn print mode off (x'14'): Causes exit from auxiliary print mode.

For DEC emulation:

• Auto print mode on (x'1B' x'5B' x'3F' x'35' x'69'): Display line is printed when cursor moves from the line.
• Auto print mode off (x'1B' x'5B' x'3F' x'34' 'x69'): Turns off auto print mode.

The host operating system or application can send the 3153 data and request that the 3153 send the data to an attached printer.

The operating system or application program controls this feature by using the emulation (IBM,DEC,WYSE) dependent command.

For IBM 3151 emulation:

• Begin passthrough mode (x'10' x'12'): All data is sent to the optional device.
• End passthrough mode (x'10' x'14'): Causes exit of passthrough mode.

For WYSE emulation:

• Transparent print mode on: (x'1B' x'63' x'23'): All data is sent to the optional device.
• Turn print mode off (x'14'): Causes exit of transparent print mode.

For DEC emulation:

• Print controller mode on: (x'1B' x'5B' x'35' x'69'): All data is sent to the optional device.
• Print controller mode off: (x'1B' x'5B' x'34' x'69'): Causes exit of print controller mode.

The main 3153 displays the application and processes any keyboard inputs. As the main 3153 receives the commands to display the application, the main 3153 simultaneously is sending the data to the auxiliary 3153. The auxiliary 3153 displays the ASCII control characters.

In this advanced debug mode configuration, the programmer or application developer can:

• "see" how the application is working (on main 3153)
• "see" what emulation commands the host application is sending (on auxiliary 3153)
