mksysb Restore Hangs with LED C31 on F50 with LFT

Environment

OS Level: AIX Version 4.2.1
Type/Model: F50

Problem

When running a mksysb restore on an F50 model with a Low Function Terminal (LFT), the system hangs with an LED C31.

Solution

The workaround consists of attaching a tty with the LFT during boot. Complete the following steps.
  1. After the keyboard icon appears, press F1 on the native keyboard or 1 on the tty keyboard. This will present the System Management Services (SMS) interface.
  2. Select Multiboot from the SMS menu.
  3. Select Install from the Multiboot menu.
  4. Select the CD-ROM drive.
  5. From the Installation and Maintenance menu select the following in sequence: maintenance mode, restore mksysb, tape drive, and continue.

The AIX Version 4.1.x fix is to install APAR IX68565.

The AIX Version 4.2.x fix is to install APAR IX68882.
