NCD NCD SYSTEMS CORPORATION Technical Note WinCenter Pro Performance Tips 1. Do not use screen savers from the WinCenter host because they use CPU cycles on the WinCenter host and they create extra network traffic. The screen savers built into the network computers or Unix Workstations should be used instead. This can be decided at setup, but the easiest way to disable it is to go into "MAIN" --> "Windows NT Setup" --> Choose options --> Add/Remove Windows Components. Then click to remove the components. 2. Do not use any non-standard cursors. Using anything other than the default NT cursor will cause an additional load on the host CPU as well as increase network traffic. 3. Do not use the WinCenter host as a domain controller. A host that is a domain controller is required to do extra work. Because the WinCenter host is used as an application server, you should try to limit the use of the resources on the WinCenter host to only application processing. Other NT hosts should be used for disk service and domain controlling instead. 4. Abnormally high CPU usage and excessive host memory use can be the result of a MS Office '95 bug under NT 3.51. This bug is caused when users leave the cursor over the top of the icon bar. This bug can be demonstrated quite graphically by tracking CPU and memory usage. The icon bar should be removed or disabled. 5. Use 32 bit applications instead of 16 bit applications. In most cases, 16 bit applications require much more NT host CPU and memory to run than do 32 bit applications. The 32 bit applications also have better performance on NT hosts. 6. Turn off "Full Drag" in "Desktop" available in "Control Panel". Having this turned on (which is the default) uses extra CPU. Turn off to save CPU cycles when moving and resizing windows. 7. Turn off or de-install unnecessary network stacks (ie NetBeui). 8. Turn off unnecessary services. For example, turn off the FTP server if FTP services are not necessary. 3 1 1
