Customizing AIX Print Services

Local Printer Queues

Local printer queue definitions are stored in /etc/qconfig.
The most convenient way for the casual sysadmin to define them is via

   smitty - Print Spooling - AIX Print Spooling - Add a print queue

then make the appropriate selections.
Use

smitty - Print Spooling - AIX Print Spooling - Change / Show Print Queue Characteristics
* PRINT QUEUE name                                   [xxxxxx]   
1 Printer Setup

to define paper size and tray options.
Use

smitty - Print Spooling - AIX Print Spooling - Change / Show Print Queue Characteristics
* PRINT QUEUE name                                   [xxxxxx]   
2 Default Print Job Attributes

  ------------- Paper/Page Options --------------
  ... 
  DUPLEX output                                       simplex (single-sided> +
  DUPLEX output                                       duplex-- long-edge bi> +

to define single or double sided printing.

Remote Printing

Printing services can also be implemented in case the rlpr tool is available. At some central place define

   export RLPR_PRINTHOST=${RLPR_PRINTHOST:=printserver.gsi.de}
   alias lpr='rlpr'
